Community Service Learning Breakfast

Picture
Bobby Donovan, Rayne O'Gara Pratt, Lily Scola, & Vanessa Mazzini joined Mr. Barrett at the Community Service Learning Breakfast as representatives of all of the children at Merrymount who participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Kevin Barrett organized this fundraiser to help support cardiovascular research and education which helps to save lives in our community and across the country.  Every student in the school participated in this event and a total of $800 was raised for the American Heart Association.  Students were inspired by our very own 1st place award-winning  "Beantown Jumpers."  In addition to jumping rope, the importance of developing hearth healthy habits was discussed with students.

Also in attendance were Nicole Buckley and Mrs. Hammerstrom.  At the end of March, 4th grader, Nicole Buckley approached her teacher, Mrs. Hammerstrom about raising money for Autism Speaks during April, Autism Awareness Month. Nicole has a cousin who has autism.  So Nicole and her teacher came up with a plan to make and sell friendship bracelets. Nicole invited 4th and 5th grade students to give up their recess time during lunch to make friendship bracelets.  The students spent 3 weeks making bracelets to sell. Then Nicole went from classroom to classroom with her classmates and invited all of the students at the Merrymount School to buy a bracelet for $3.00 to help raise money for Autism Awareness month. Students had created about 150 bracelets and raised $530.  The students were amazed at the generosity and support shown by their classmates. The excitement in the room was electric as Nicole went up to announce on the loudspeaker how much was raised.  ”Nicole has a generous heart and spirit and the drive to make things happen,” said her teacher Mrs. Hammerstrom. What a learning experience this was for the Merrymount School.  The 4th and 5th grade teachers were so proud of this student led effort to show compassion and support for others.
